The Faculty of Agriculture of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore was established at the Piacenza campus in 1953. Thanks to the research activities, the education provided, and the prestigious positions held by the graduates over more than five decades, the Faculty today enjoys a prestigious reputation that extends well beyond the national borders. With this reputation, the Faculty has played and plays an important role in many current issues of interest in the world of agriculture and collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in Italy. The Faculty of Agriculture has strong focus on the ethical-moral aspects of education as well as of research. It promotes intensive research programs through 9 scientific institutes and 5 research centres. In recent years, the research has been developed within several particularly significant areas: genetics, food security, vegetable and animal productions, the safeguarding of dairy products, the wine sector, agro-food economics, and environment protection. The Institute of Entomology and Plant Pathology of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore has a long history of study devoted to development and application of Integrated Pest Management strategies in crops (stone fruit orchards, grapevine, maize). Since the end of the 1980s, the staff of the Institute (Prof. Cravedi and Dr. Emanuele Mazzoni) resolved the increasing problem produced in peach orchards by insecticide resistant Myzus persicae populations. Specific projects to study the insecticide resistance problem adopting a multidisciplinary approach were funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and University and coordinated by the Institute of Entomology and Plant pathology of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (MURST-PRIN 2001 prot. 2001071285; MIUR-PRIN 2005 prot. 2005078829; MIUR-PRIN 2007 prot. 2007RL22Z4.UCSC is used to inform Italy and Italian farmers, growers and Regulatory Authorities of the resistance status in Italian pest species.
