Vyzkumny Ustav Vcelarsky s.r.o. was founded in 1919 and became the State Research Institute for Beekeeping and Sericulture in 1922. The institute was privatised in 1997 (Ltd.).
The Bee Research Institute Dol is a SME providing research, teaching and advice for beekeepers and marketing honeybee products and services with laboratories for microbiology, parasitology, pathology and toxicology of honeybees. BRI DOL worked as reference laboratory for honeybee diseases in the Czech Republic. The testing laboratory is accredited according EN ISO/IEC 17025 and 9001.
The interest and skills of BRI DOL are defined for unique tasks in research of honeybee diseases diagnostics and control, medicals and treatment of Varroa mites, bee breeding programs, instrumental insemination of queen bees, evaluation of bee races, quality control of bee products and manufacture of Pharmacopeia honey and food grade beeswax.
The institute owns approximately 1050 colonies, which are in 7 experimental stations in different climatic conditions, so evaluating all aspect of beekeeping in different conditions. BRI DOL is working on several research projects supported by the Czech government and the European Community. In the Czech Republic BRI DOL cooperates with the Czech Beekeepers Union, the State Veterinary Administration as well as Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Crop Research Institute and Masaryk University. At international level BRI DOL cooperates with the Austrian Professional Beekeepers Association (ÖEIB), European Professional Beekeepers Association (EPBA), Martin Luther Universität in Halle-Wittenberg (Germany), Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf (Germany) and other research centres in Europe. 
In addition to research, BRI DOL is involved also in other activities such as services and consultation for beekeepers. Members of the staff also lecture in universities and other institutions. These points are very important for spreading of knowledge and new aspects and results obtained during research and development projects (dissemination).
